If another animal seizes a grasshopper by the leg, the grasshopper will throw its own leg off, rather than let itself be caught. A special lining quickly seals the hole, so that the grasshopper doesn't lose much blood. A grasshopper can work surprisingly well with only one of its long jumping legs to work with.
