Special valves in your heart stop your blood from flowing the wrong way through it. They are forced open by the pumped blood, then snap shut to prevent it from flowing back. As they shut they make the familiar "thump thump" sound of a heartbeat. This is the sound doctors hear when they listen to your chest with a stethoscope.
