Blood flows from your heart along strong tubes, called arteries (shown in red). These eventually branch into smaller tubes, called capillaries. They are so narrow that blood cells have to squeeze through in single file. Their walls are only one cell thick, so substances can pass easily through them to and from the blood cells. The capillaries join up again to form veins (shown in blue), which take the blood back to the heart.
