There are different types of blood. Doctors divide them into four main groups - A, B, O and AB. They can do tests to find out which group your blood belongs to. If a person needs a lifesaving blood transfusion, they must be given blood from a suitable group, or they might die. Doctors only discovered the different blood types about 90 years ago.
