Blood is red because of haemoglobin, a chemical found inside the red blood cells. It absorbs oxygen in the lungs and carries it around the body. Oxygen-rich haemoglobin is bright red. It turns purply blue once it has given up its oxygen load. This is why the veins on the back of your hand look blue.
