A hard knock may break some of the blood vessels under your skin. The blood leaks out into the area around the vessels and causes a bruise. A bruise changes colour as the red pigment, haemo-globin, in the blood leaks out and loses the oxygen which gives it its colour. It turns blue then breaks down into other yellow and green pigments.
