Skin-deep colour
The colour of your skin depends on how much of the brown-black pigment, called melanin, it contains. Melanin is made by cells, called melanocytes, at the base of the epidermis. Dark skin contains more melanin than light skin. Melanin helps protect the skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This is why your skin may tan in the sun.
