Under your skin
Deep under your skin, beneath the dermis, is a layer of fat. It acts as an insulator, keeping heat in. It can also be converted into energy by your body. Your fat layer is usually just a few millimetres (about an eighth of an inch) thick. Some whales living in icy seas have fat layers 38cm (15in) thick.
