You have about 5 million hairs on your body, with about 100,000 of these growing on your head. Hair grows out of deep pits, called follicles, in your skin. Cells at the base of the hair divide and push the hair up through the follicle. The hair you can see is made of dead cells, filled with the protein, keratin.
