Like the colour of your skin, the colour of your hair depends on how much melanin it contains. Dark hair has lots of melanin; fair hair has very little melanin. The shape of your hair follicles determines whether your hair is straight, wavy or curly. Straight hair grows from a round follicle, wavy hair grows from an oval follicle and curly hair from a flat follicle.
