You may not be able to see what causes an itch, but you can certainly feel the itch itself. An itch may be caused by a speck of dust which has become lodged in a hair follicle, or by a hair bent over inside its follicle. The itchy feeling is detected by tiny, very sensitive nerves around the hair root.
