Taking a back road
Your delicate spinal cord runs down a tunnel of holes in your backbone, or spine. The bones protect it from damage. The cord is a thick bundle of nerves, connecting your brain to the rest of your body. It has 31 pairs of smaller nerves branching off it and reaching every part of the body. In adults, the spinal cord is about 45cm (17.5in) long.
