If you have an operation, or a filling at the dentist's, you are given an anaesthetic to prevent you from feeling any pain. This is a chemical which stops your nerves from working properly so they cannot pass signals on. A local anaesthetic numbs a particular part of your body, such as your gum. A general anaesthetic puts you into a deep sleep.
