Smells are tiny amounts of chemicals in the air. When you breathe in, smells go up your nose and into a hollow space, called the nasal cavity. They are picked up by smell detector cells which have tiny hairs on them, covered in sticky mucus. It absorbs the smell chemicals. Then the cells send signals to your brain.
