Hick! Hick! Hick!
Hiccups are short, sudden gasps of breath. They happen when your diaphragm contracts and moves down more sharply than usual. After each breath your vocal cords snap shut, making a "hic" noise. Frightening the sufferer or drinking from the wrong side of a glass are among the many supposed cures for hiccups.
