For a baby to form, a sperm cell from a man must join with a woman's egg cell, or ovum. This is called fertilization. The egg is made in one of the woman's ovaries. It then travels down a tube, called a Fallopian tube. During sexual intercourse, the man's sperm pass into the woman's body and swim up into the tube where fertilization may occur.
