Life support
In the uterus, the baby gets food and oxygen from an organ called the placenta. It brings the mother's and baby's blood close together, although they never mix. Food and oxygen pass across the placenta and into the baby's blood through its umbilical cord. Waste products go the other way. Your belly button shows where your umbilical cord was.
