Blood boom
During pregnancy, the amount of blood in a mother's body may increase by a third from about 4 litres (7 pints) to 5.5 litres (9.6 pints). This extra blood is needed to supply the growing baby with nourishment and oxygen. The mother's heart has to work harder to pump the blood around her body.
