A newborn baby has soft patches of membrane between its skull bones. These are fontanelles. They allow the baby's head to change shape so it can squeeze out of its mother's body more easily. The head returns to a normal shape a few days later. The fontanelles shrink and close over the next two years, to be replaced by bone.
