When the duck-billed platypus was discovered in 1797 people thought that it must be either a duck or a reptile because it was found to lay eggs. The female builds her nest in a river bank tunnel and in it lays soft, sticky eggs. But when the babies hatch they feed on their mother's milk showing that the platypus is in fact a mammal, although a very strange one.
