Lemmings are small, hamster-like rodents from Norway. Their lives seem to go in strange four year cycles. For the first three years the lemmings breed at an ever-increasing rate. Then they seem to panic at the overcrowding and leave their homes in millions to find more space. Their mad rush carries them until they reach rivers or the sea. Even then they plunge in and try to swim across but most drown.
