The South American giant anteater has a 60 cm (24 in) long tongue which it uses to catch ants - its staple diet. It tears open an anthill with its strong claws and pokes its sticky tongue around inside until it is coated with ants, then flicks it out and swallows the ants whole. It can do this twice a second and can easily catch well over 30,000 ants a day.
