Vampire bats live on a diet of animal blood. They hunt at night and attack animals while they are asleep. The bat's saliva contains a substance which stops the blood from clotting and closing the wound. A great vampire bat weighs about 28 g (1 oz) and drinks about a tablespoonful of blood a day.
