The African elephant has the biggest nose of any mammal. A large male's trunk is about 2.5 m (8 ft) from base to tip. The trunk is used for breathing, smelling and sucking up water. It also acts as an extra hand for picking up food and scratching. Elephants in Kenya's National Park even learnt to turn taps on with their trunks.
