Beavers are ingenious builders. First they build a dam of logs and mud across a river to form a pond. In the pond they build a dome-shaped wooden lodge the size of a large tent. With its strong teeth, a beaver can fell a tree 1/2 m (20 in) thick in just 15 minutes. Inside the lodge is a living area above water level, reached through underwater tunnels.
