The fastest land mammal over long distances is the pronghorn antelope of the USA. It can keep up a speed of 45-50 kph (28-31 mph) for about 14 minutes and has a top speed of 85 kph (53 mph). A pronghorn can run fast for so long because it has very well-developed lungs and a heart twice as big as that of other animals of a similar size.
