Why in danger
Many mammals become endangered because their homes are destroyed by farmers or foresters or they are hunted for their meat or fur. The South American rain forests contain about half of the world's plant and animal species. As they are destroyed to make room for farms or buildings, thousands of species are lost. It is thought that a piece of rain forest the size of Switzerland is cut down each year.
