Many of the big cats, including the Asian lion, the leopard and the tiger, are endangered. In 1945 there were over 100,000 tigers in India; by 1970 probably about 4,000 were left. Tigers were hunted for their fur and for sport. Today there are special tiger reserves in India and tigers are now strictly protected by law.
