The golden lion tamarin is one of the world's rarest monkeys. Only about 200 still survive in patches of forest in Brazil. Much of the monkey's forest home has been cleared to make way for sugar cane and coffee plantations and for building. One fifth of all the species of monkeys and apes in the world are endangered, including proboscis monkeys, black gibbons, chimpanzees and orang-utans.
