A policy of the South African government for most of the 20th century. It involved keeping black people strictly separate from white people, so that they were not allowed to marry each other, play sport together, work or worship together or even sit on the same park benches. From 1985 these laws gradually became less strict and the whole system was abolished in early 1990s.
