Fugitive Slave Law
Laws providing for the return of runaway slaves to their masters. First passed in 1793, these laws were often ignored by northern states once slavery had been abolished there. In 1850, harsher laws were aimed at closing the Underground Railroad. All these laws were repealed (cancelled) by Lincoln in 1864.
