How do fish hide in the open sea?
Herring, mackerel and many other fish, that swim near the surface of the great oceans, have dark backs and pale bellies. This coloring, called countershading, works to cancel out the effect of sunlight shining on their bodies from above, and so helps these fish to hide even in open water.
