Female octopuses breed only once in their lifetime. After mating, the female lays long strings of eggs, and glues them to the roof of her cave. She tends her eggs for up to six weeks, and never leaves her lair to go hunting. Many females die of hunger or exhaustion, before their eggs hatch out.
