If you look in a mirror and swallow, you will see a lump in your throat. This is your larynx, or voice box. It sits at the top of your trachea, or windpipe. Two bands of elastic tissue and muscle are stretched across it. These are your vocal cords. When you speak, you breathe out and air passes over the cords. It makes them vibrate and produce sounds.
