Amazing But True
People on La Gomera, in the Canary Islands, mainly speak Spanish. But they also use a whistled language, called silbo, to talk to each other. On a clear day, the sound can carry up to 8km (5 miles). This is useful because the island is very hilly and it is quicker to whistle to people living in the next valley than to walk over to see them.
