Miracle mould
Penicillin and other antibiotic drugs are widely used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Penicillin was only discovered in 1928. A Scottish scientist, Alexander Fleming, found that a type of mould, penicillium, could kill germs. Penicillin, derived from penicillium, is used to treat illnesses such as pneumonia which were once fatal.
