The first elephants lived 40 million years ago. Moeritherium was only as big as a large pig and had no tusks or trunk. Today's African elephant is 300 times bigger. Deinotherium, which lived 15 million years ago, was much larger than today's elephants. It had tusks which curved back towards its chest. It probably used them like forks to dig up food.
