The Latin word for bats is 'chiroptera' which means 'hand-wings'. About 60 million years ago some insect-eating mammals developed into bats and their bodies became adapted for flight. A bat's wings have formed from its hands and arms. Its fingers are very long and support the skin stretched across them. The thumb is left free. The wing is also attached to the bat's back legs and often to its tail.
