Most small desert mammals spend the day underground to avoid the heat. Scientists studying gerbil burrows in the Kara-Kum Desert, USSR, found that just 10 cm (4 in) below ground the temperature was 17°C (61°F) cooler than above. Mammals' breathing helps keep the burrows moist. In the day the burrow entrance is blocked to stop moisture escaping.
