Desert plants provide food and water for many animals. Cacti store water in their leaves and stems. Giant saguaro cacti in the North American deserts can weigh as much as 10 tonnes of which 9 tonnes may be water. Mammals eat the plants and seeds and can get enough water from them to live without drinking.
